UC, Awarded 1st Place Best Schools in the Cordillera Region at the 2014 National Gawad Kalasag

With its outstanding performance and initiatives in helping the government uplift the standard of disaster management in the region and inducing the theme: Kalamidad at Sakuna Laban, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan, UC is awarded 1st Place in Disaster Risk Management and Humanitarian Assistance in the Cordillera Region.

The annual search since 1998, Gawad Kalasag award is bestowed to outstanding individuals, groups and institutions who exemplify excellence on disaster reduction risk management (DRRM) and humanitarian assistance.

It recognizes outstanding performance of the Local DRRM Councils, civil society groups,schools, hospitals and other major stakeholders in promoting significant DRRM- climate change adaptation (CCA) programs and innovations.

It also commends heroic act of individuals, groups or institutions during natural and human-induced disasters.

Office of Civil Defense - Cordillera, announced thru their facebook page the four(4) awardees in the region namely:

  • University of the Cordilleras - 1st Place Best School in Private-Urban Category
  • La Trinidad MDRRMC - 3rd Place Best MDRRMC in 1st-3rd Class Municipality Category
  • Baguio-Benguet Public Information Civic Action Group (BB-PICAG) - 3rd Place Best Volunteer Organizations in Volunteer Organization Category
  • Baguio City Emergency Medical Service (BCEMS) - 2nd Place Best Government Emergency Response Management in Best Government Emergency Response Management Category

For the Gawad Kalasag entries, nominees submitted documentations of their DRRM activities, then assessed at the OCD office along DPS Compound, Baguio City.

Benjamin Salvosa, Founder of the Baguio Colleges Foundation, was named one of ten Awardees of the Quezon "Medalya ng Karangalan" by Quezon Province Governor Wilfrido L. Enverga and Quezon Day Awards Committee Chairman Antonio P. Acyata. Mr. Salvosa, who traces his roots to Unisan, Quezon; served in 1954 as Chairman and General Manager of the Philippine Coconut Administration (PHILCOA), drafted into government service by then President Ramon Magsaysay. Mr. Salvosa was cited posthumously for his accomplishments on behalf of the Coconut Farmers of the country, and for his contributions to the development of the Philippine Coconut Industry. The occasion for the Awards is this year's 125th birth anniversary of the late President Manuel L. Quezon, to be commemorated on August 19, 2003, at Lucena City.

The University of the Cordilleras is the newest holder of the Hall of Fame award in the regional category of the Gawad Kalasag for disaster readiness and emergency management.

Proving the university's solid support to government initiatives on disaster response, the University of the Cordilleras has been named the Best School (Urban-Private Category) for the second consecutive time in the Cordillera tilt of the 2015 Gawad Kalasag.
