Proving the university's solid support to government initiatives on disaster response, the University of the Cordilleras has been named the Best School (Urban-Private Category) for the second consecutive time in the Cordillera tilt of the 2015 Gawad Kalasag.

Gawad Kalasag is the annual search of the Department of National Defense - National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council for individuals, groups, and institutions who exemplify excellence in disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) and humanitarian assistance.

KALASAG stands for Kalamida at SAkuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan.

Inspired from last year's finish as a national recipient of the Kalasag for the same title, UC improved its policies on DRRM with a display of systematic rescue and risk-mitigating tactics in times of distress. More employees were also trained in first-aid and disaster response.

UC also led the training and consequent evaluation of an earthquake drill held at Pinsao National High School with the objective to build more disaster-ready communities. Members of the UC Safety and Security Committee (UC-SSC) then trained the high school's faculty and staff on other risk-reduction strategies and first aid techniques.

The UC-SSC is the university's local DRRM council composed of teaching and non-teaching staff headed by Vice President for Administration Dr. Leonarda Aguinalde.

On the hand, Project HELEN's year-round activities on health, education, livelihood, environment, and nurturance also boosted the university's standing. Validators commended Project HELEN's multifaceted grassroots initiatives on the five key target areas of the organization.

Using the 1990 Baguio earthquake as reference, Quality Management Representative Roland Malafu, in his message during the awarding ceremonies, underscored the university's commitment in shaping a disaster-ready and disaster-resilient community with students as the primary stakeholders.

The university received a Php50,000 cash prize to support its disaster-response initiatives.
