41 schools in Dagupan, Itogon receive P7.6M worth of books from UC, CIPI

July 09, 2018

The University of the Cordilleras (UC) in partnership with Children International Philippines Inc. (CIPI) donated a total of 19,234 books, valued at approximately P7.6M, to 41 public elementary and high schools in Itogon, Benguet and Dagupan City.

UC's community arm Project HELEN led by Vice President for Administration Dr. Leonarda Aguinalde turned over 9,661 books to 16 public elementary and eight high schools in Itogon from July 2-4, 2018.

Nancy D. Costina, an English and Research teacher at Fianza Memorial National High School in Tinongdan, is grateful for the books they received. "These books can be used by our students for their supplementary readings and our teachers can also use them as references," added Costina.

Meanwhile, in a separate turnover ceremony on July 3, 2018, representatives from Dagupan schools traveled to UC to personally receive the books. Thirteen public elementary schools and four high schools in Dagupan received a total of 9,473 books which were transported back to their province via a truck provided by the Local Government of Dagupan.

Dr. Lorna Bugayong, Schools Division Superintendent of the Department of Education - Dagupan, affirmed that these will be a big help to both their students and teachers especially in senior high school.

Bugayong said that they plan on intensifying programs to reignite the love for reading by introducing reading corners inside classrooms and encouraging students to use books as their references for their assignments.

The textbooks and workbooks on subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Geography, and a selection of novels and storybooks were imported from the United States by CIPI, a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to alleviating the burdens and effects of poverty on Filipino children.

"We hope that these schools maximize the use of these books to make the quote 'A reader today is a leader tomorrow' a reality," said Aguinalde.

She added that the programs of Project HELEN this July coincide with UC's co-founder and the community arm's namesake, Evangelina D. Salvosa's 108th birth anniversary this July 12.

The Dagupan and Itogon book donations complete the 28th wave of learning resource materials turnover spearheaded by UC and CIPI since 2010. To date, more than half a million books have been donated to 1,173 elementary and high schools in Northern Luzon.
