UC student-designed IEC materials on Balili revitalization launched

October 12, 2017

Posters that encourage residents to take part in the revitalization of the Balili River will now be seen throughout the barangays situated along the length of the river system. These posters, conceptualized and designed by students of the University of the Cordilleras, were launched during the Balili River Day.

This comes after an undergraduate research study of Communication students from the UC College of Arts and Sciences on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the residents of St. Joseph Village Barangay on the revitalization of the Balili River found that the residents are only "slightly knowledgeable" about information pertaining to the state of and projects directed towards the river.

In response, the student designed the said information, education, and communication (IEC) materials to inform the residents of the ill effects of ingesting contaminated water after the group discovered that many of the barangays still acquire their water resources from the river and its tributaries. The IEC materials also reiterate the pressing need for proper waste disposal especially for barangays near the stretch of the river system.

These IEC materials will be part of the stakeholders' strengthened campaign spearheaded by the Balili River System Revitalization Coalition in improving the state of the river which was already considered "biologically-dead" by recent studies.
