UC debate team wins in 4-cornered competition
The University of the Cordilleras debating team proved more convincing than their counterparts from the University of Baguio to win the concluding match in last week's "Debate sa Bombo" held at the function hall of the King's College of the Philippines in La Trinidad.
With lawyers Perlita Chan-Rondez and Edgar Avila comprising the panel of judges, the UC team, comprised of Brylle Garnet Daniel, Everly Ramirez Rana, Ado Nai Rimando Rizalde, and Jose Carlos Rivera showed more preparation and homework in breezing through the opposition.
The UB team, comprised of Michael Ray Aro, Marius Ragasa, Roma Micu, and Carl Nicolas Mendoza took the affirmative side on the proposition that federalism is the best form of government for the Cordillera with UC taking the negative side.
But much as the UB team built up its case, UC countered with more convincing arguments to gain the nod of the judges.
UB's Micu was the run-away choice as best speaker while UC's Rizalde was adjudged winner by the judges that included director Helen Tibaldo of the Philippine Information Agency.
Dr. Ricardo Umayam, KCP president, said the contest proved a revelation as it showed the ideas today's youth hold on various concerns. "It is quite a sight to watch how the debaters opened up their hearts and minds in expressing their ideas," he said.
Earlier in the week, UB defeated the KCP debating team to set up the match with UC which also outpointed the Saint Louis University team in a separate match.
Victor Decoy of Bombo Radyo said the debate was held to encourage discussion on contemporary issues that included autonomy and federalism.
He praised the participating schools for rising up to the occasion by showing preparation and teamwork in ventilating their ideas.
