University of the Cordilleras Communication students win 'Best Documentary' in 3rd DokyuBata Contest
A documentary produced by second year Communication students from the University of the Cordilleras (UC) in Baguio City was adjudged as the "Best Documentary" and the "Most Child-Friendly Documentary" in the Young Adult Division of the 3rd DokyuBata Video Documentary Contest. The documentary bested 9 other finalists in the said division narrowed down from over 100 entries nationwide.

The documentary entitled "Baknang," an Ibaloi word loosely translated as "wealth," positively highlights the nutrition of the children of Bantic in Itogon, Benguet, located at the peak of Mount Ugo which borders the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya and Benguet. Bantic is a five-hour hike up Mount Ugo, which is roughly two hours away from Baguio City.
As a community that thrives on organic and traditional modes of farming, the residents of Bantic live by the phrase, "You eat what you plant." The documentary highlighted that the children of Bantic are generally healthy which is mainly attributed to the proper nutrition they acquire from their diet consisting mainly of organic produce. Residents shared that they rarely eat canned or processed food since it is considered a "luxury" in their area as their prices are nearly doubled due to the transportation cost.
The production team is composed of second-year UC Communication students Jessie Pacleb, Rowelyn Jardinez, Joshua Sibonga, Allyza Tulay, Rencel Bono, Noemi Pal-og, Jastine Galleto, Mary Bernabe, Mikka Soriano, Khristian Ibay, Ian Lopez, Jasmine Pacia, Gideon Biang, and faculty adviser Patrick John Santiago.
The team dedicated their win to the children of Bantic and decided to use their cash prize to give back to the community through various community activities.
The DokyuBata Competition is an annual national video documentary-making contest hosted by the National Council for Children's Television (NCCT) with the theme: "Dokyu-Trisyon: Mahahalaga at Napapanahong Isyu Hinggil sa Pagkain at Nutrisyon ng Batang Pilipino." The panel of judges was headed by NCCT Chairperson Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan.
